Fort McHenry, MD

Next on the American History Battle tour is Fort McHenry.  I’m a little embarrassed to say I really didn’t now very much about the War of 1812, but the many monuments we saw along the coast as we sailed past the Delmarva peninsula and up into the Long Island Sound, really sparked my interest.

On Sept 13 & 14 of 1814 the British bombed Fort McHenry which was protecting Baltimore.   This was the battle that Francis Scott Key, detained on a British ship, watched the U.S. flag over the fort illuminated by bombs and was inspired to write the Star Spangled Banner.  So what was this war all about?  In a nutshell, the British were restricting our trade due to their war with France and impressment of American sailors into the British Navy.  The Americans we’re being bullied by the British and declared war.
